- Description
- The model for an undergraduate music program is fashioned by many factors including constraints of time, funding and compliance. Within these conditions an amount of flexibility exists including modes of delivery and music content. A challenge is presented when attempting to develop a program that successfully complies with structural requirements while providing a balance of relevant music activities and skills for future employment. This paper examines the anticipated shape of future global work skills and considers the various characteristics musicians in the foreseeable future will need to possess. Of note is the development of a different level of social intelligence as required by a post-digital world. Musicians will need to adopt new forms of media and communication and possess a cognitive ability that can effectively deal with information from multiple sources. They will also require new skills to enable them to collaborate with people from different background and cultures as technological developments make the world more accessible. This research discusses different types of students entering a tertiary music program and provides ideas for undergraduate music training that capitalises on the strengths of traditional music craft while contending with the expanding needs of future employment.
